Unclaimed Property Search Checklist

Complete this checklist to ensure you haven't missed any source of unclaimed property. Check each item as you go.

List all full legal names you've used (maiden name, married names, shortened versions)

List every state you've ever lived or worked in — even briefly

List names of deceased family members whose estate you may administer

Have your Social Security number available — some state portals use it for more accurate results

Gather old addresses — useful if a match asks you to prove you lived at that address

Search MissingMoney.com — covers ~40 states simultaneously

Search Unclaimed.org — official NAUPA directory with links to all 50 states

Try each name variation separately in both databases

Search deceased family members' names in both databases

IRS — irs.gov/refunds — uncashed or undelivered tax refund checks

FHA — HUD FHA refunds — if you had an FHA loan

VA — VA Insurance — veterans' unclaimed life insurance dividends

PBGC — pbgc.gov — pension from a bankrupt employer

Treasury — TreasuryDirect — matured uncashed savings bonds

Note the property ID, amount, and original holder for each match

Click "File a Claim" on each state's database for each match

Gather required documents: photo ID, proof of address, SSN

For estate claims: gather death certificate + letters testamentary

Submit claim and note confirmation number + expected timeline

Follow up after 120 days if no response
